SESAME: Safety and Security of Multi-Robot Systems
The project is on “Safety and Security of Multi-Robot Systems” (SESAME, EU H2020 project 101017258, duration 2021-2024). The project is undertaken by a consortium of 17 organisations which include leading research institutions and robotic manufacturers in Europe.

SESAME received funding of 7 million Euros, with Hull receiving 600,000 Euros.

Multi-Robot Systems (MRS) comprise distributed and interconnected robotic teams and swarms that use collaborative and social intelligence to carry out tasks beyond the competency of a single robot. Although MRS offer competitive advantages, there are unresolved technological challenges including the openness, uncertainty, variability, and interplay of safety and security in such systems. SESAME addresses these challenges through an open, modular, model-based, intelligent approach for the systematic and largely automated engineering of dependable MRS.

SESAME is underpinned by public meta-models, components, configuration tools and real-time safety and security monitors supporting the dependable MRS operation in uncertain settings characterised by emergent behaviours and possible cyber-attacks. SESAME defines five end-user-led use-cases in the domains of healthcare, agile manufacturing, agri-food, and inspection and maintenance.

The University of Hull leads the R&D work on safety and contributes to work on security where the Dependable Intelligent Systems research group makes substantial contributions to the international state-of-the-art.

Our external collaborations include the Federal University of Juiz de Fora in Brazil, where Dr André Luiz de Oliveira and his team are pursuing work on variability and product lines in the scope of SESAME.
